Return to Olympus [09 Aug 2007|09:52pm]

So I was in a thrift store in Ann Arbor, MI, today and scored Malfunkshun's Return to Olympus for a couple bucks. Talk about a lucky find! I would've expected to find it somewhere in Washington, but Michigan? Brought back some sweet memories. I notice that this community is pretty dead, but I had to share the news of my find with someone who knows who Andrew Wood is...

Any chance the film about Andy will be released outside Seattle? I live in the UK and would love to see it somehow.

Official posters are now up for sale at the Malfunkshun website. They're between $23 and $28 with free shipping (for now). The designs are really beautiful and the first 333 are autographed by Scot Barbour. I just ordered mine.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I have a seperate page now for photos, fan reviews, and the like from the film and tribute show. It's pretty sparse thus far, but I do have some great pics coming in. Waiting on a few more reviews and more photos. I'm amazed at how old Stone is starting to look, reminds me of one of my older uncles. Ah well, happens to the best of us I suppose. ;)

hi. i'm new around here as most of the soundgarden communities blow, so i was told that this one (although primarily focusing on andrew wood) is fairly active and it seems to be. i'm mainly a big soundgarden fan and have been since i was in 6th grade. of course i'm also a big fan of malfunkshun\mlb, green river\mudhoney, pearl jam, alice in chains, etc. etc. i'm also a huge metal head and i'm really into horror movies, roleplaying, and h.p. lovecraft. i play guitar and am currently starting a metal band. recently i've been getting a lot more into mother love bone and i've been listening to a lot of old shit like the deep six compilation. anyways that's about it.

To rhinosaur and anybody else who saw the Andy Wood documentary this last week: I'm looking for reviews, photos, scans, anything at all you guys might have to contribute for my website. I've gotten some good reviews from my friends so far, and one suggested that I compile them together for the site. If you'd like to write one for me, or have me paste one you've already written and give you credit, please comment here. Thanks!

I was waiting in line for about 45 minutes last night to the Andrew Wood documentary when the guy came out and said the show was full, chances are infintessimal to get in at this point. I didn't see one person leave the line after he said that. Staying in line was just as good as watching the show anyways (okay well not as good, but more LIVE) since I had Andy's cousins (who were bitching about how they couldn't get tickets-- sold out-- even being family. Apparently even Andy's brothers Brian and Kevin-- who are musicians and played a show at the Maribu on lower Queen Anne last night-- couldn't get tickets.) So Andy's cousins in front of me (stories about the grandfather who cut down the logs to build the family home on Baimbridge Island) and in back of me in line was a guy who went to middle school with Andy and jammed on keyboard-- with Andy singing-- on Baimbridge Island beach bonfire parties during the Malfunkshun days. He gave Andy a ride up to Queen Anne two weeks before 'the tragedy,' as he put it. "He flagged me down, said he needed a ride, I dropped him off at the top of the hill, he said 'thanks for the ride' and I never saw him again," he said. "It was trippy."
At one point I came *this close* to getting a ticket when this old-school looking guy walked by selling a single ticket and I was first to raise my hand and yell 'here!' but one of the *Andy's cousins* was closer to him so she got it. The Baimbridge keyboard Andy jammer guy behind me said, "Man, she took that right from under you." I said, "That's okay, she's family."
And it was okay, because she was the one who was pointing out who everyone was: there's Scott Barbour, the director, (she went over and talked to him about getting tickets, he told her he couldn't even get tickets for HIS OWN family).

"Stone's right over there."

Yep, sure enough, just hanging out super low-key (didn't recognize them until it was pointed out to me) hiding behind shades, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. Jeff was signing autographs and laughing with an old school P.J. looking dude (Jeff's friend looked exactly like Jeff did back in the day with the trippy hat over bandana, high tops, and a white wife beater T shirt with HALF ASS MONKEY BOY written in huge lettering on the back.)

That's when I said fuck this, lost my place in line and had my first encounter with Stone Gossard.

Anyone going to the HALF ASS MONKEY BOY documentary tonight at EMP? Fuck man I can't WAIT!

I was hooked on Temple of the Dog from the first time seeing that "Hunger Strike" video in 1993. Does anyone know where that was filmed? As far as beaches in Seattle, it looks like Golden Gardens, since that's the only park that still allows bonfires. But who knows its probably a fake Hollywood set with designer imposter thermal underwear and Armani flannels.

Then I got the MLB album, could see why they were the first Seattle band to get a major label deal. They also put out a "Mother Love Bone" Video where they reflect a bit, but this documentary sounds like its a whole nother LEVEL.

I got the Green River cd but wasn't that into it. Too muddy. Must have been the Mudhoney guys taking over and leaving Stone's psychedelic lullabies to wait for Andrew...

Crazy how things work out though, huh? How the lead singer o.d's, they give a tape called Dollar Short (I think?) to Chili Peppers Jack Irons who gives the tape to Eddie Vedder who records the vocals for "Alive" they fly him up and in a week they recorded "Ten."

At least that's how I remember the whole folklore, but it's been a while. This documentary should be like filling in the missing pieces of the story, kind of like "Revenge of the Sith" or something...

Did I mention I can't WAIT!!!!!

hey guys, I know this community hasn't been overly active lately, so if you didn't know Malfunkshun: The Andrew Wood Story is playing for the Seattle International Film Festival. If you haven't seen these sites already, info is here:
http://www.malfunkshun.com/
http://www.seattlefilm.org/festival/film/detail.aspx?id=6539&FID=5

I was fortunate enough to have attended the world premiere last night. The movie was great, a lot better than I was expecting. I got a friend to come with me who for the most part just listens to jazz, so of course had never heard of anyone in the movie, but he apparently enjoyed it and described it as "the coolest documentary I've ever seen." He also said it was way better than the other 2 films he's seen at the SIFF this year.

It had a really good mood to it, the beginning was really nice and made him seem like a really great person and then you know it got a lot heavier as the film went on, but it still kinda maintained that good feeling, if that makes sense at all.

They used all these colorful animations for transistions, which at first felt a little over the top, especially for a documentary, but then I realized it actually seemed to fit Andy really well.

There were tons of people at the premiere, the theatre was almost full (there were about 1000 seats I'd say). It felt really nice to know that there's so many people that loved Andy and his music. Scot Barbour (the director) was there and did a little q & a section at the end, which I got a video of part of it. It's on my digital camera, so the quality is very low and I haven't had a chance to watch it so I don't even know how much you can hear. Plus my friend and I started talking a bit towards the end and it's about 7 minutes long so the file is probably humongous, but if enough people are interested in watching it I can try to get it to you, so let me know if you'd like to see it. Toni Wood (Andy's mom) and Regan Hagar (Malfunkshun's drummer) were apparently there as well, though I didn't see them.

I hope everyone gets a chance to see the film sometime, it really was great. If you live near Seattle it's playing again thursday at the EMP and I think there's going to be some sort of concert afterwards, but unfortunately I'm underage and can't go.

So does anyone have the complete "Return To Olympus" album? And is anyone willing to deal the tracks out? I know the songs that were posted on here earlier were on the album, but 3 songs isn't enough!

Thanks if anyone does.
